Unit # 1: The Spanish speaking world
Topic # 1: Greetings and introductions
Task # 1: The objective of this task is to find out and appreciate how some different cultures around the world greet each other.
Activity # 1: Please get into groups of 3 or 4 and brainstorm different ways that you know on how people from different countries greet each other. Please be specific on the differences. Once we finish brainstorming in our groups, we will share our thoughts with the whole class. Please choose a spoke person from the group to share your ideas.
Activity # 3: Please get into groups of 4. These groups are called the home group. Each member of the group will have a number between one and four. Once you know your number, I need for all # 1s to get into one group, all # 2s into another group, all 3s into another group, and all 4s into another group. The groups that have the same number all called the expert groups.
Each expert group is going to be assigned one of the videos above. You need to watch the video as a group and observe how people greet each other. After watching the video a couple of times, discuss with your expert group what you observed and write these observations. Once everyone in the group understands what the video is about, the group needs to come up with a presentation (Power Point, video, poster) that clearly explains the most important points in the video that your group saw.
Once you finish your presentation and feel confident enough on presenting it, each member of the expert group will go back to their home group and explain the video they saw.
Activity # 4: Once every member of each home group is done presenting their part, each home group will be assigned (at random) one of the videos to present to the whole class. The students will need to illustrate what happens in the video through a skit.

Be as creative with the characters and the scenery.

- jueves 17 de octubre Power Point # 1: How old are you and when is your birthday? (Slides 1-7) With your partner, go back and practice how to ask someone how old he/she is and when is his/her birthday.
- Interview: Now you will interview 3 students in the class (Not from your group) and ask them the following: 1) ¿Cómo estás? 2) ¿Cuándo es tu cumpleaños? 3) ¿Cuántos años tienes? Write their answers in your notebook. When you write your answers, make sure you conjugate the verbscorrectly and use pronouns correctly. When you are done with the interview, we will touch base to share our answers.

- Number Dictation: Now your teacher will say several numbers out loud, and you will write them down in number form and check your answers.
- Adding and subtracting numbers: Now we will learn how to use the terminology for adding and subtracting numbers in Spanish.
- lunes 21 de octubre Practice number dictation.Students will hear a series of numbers and they will have to write them in number form.
- Practice the expressions used in addition, subraction, and multiplication. Students will practice in pairs the different math operations mentioned above while using the correct expressions to carry out the different operations. When done, several students will come to the board and do the different operations on the board while using the appropriate expressions.
- miercoles 22 de octubre Birthday Song: Students will learn how to sing happy birthday in Spanish. They will listen to a YouTube video and look at the lyrics at the same time.
- Word document # 1: My Birthday Read the paragraph with your partner. You have 3 objectives: 1) Find the meaning of the underlined words 2) Understand the paragraph 3) Write your own paragraph about your birthday. - Tic-Tac-Toe: This is a game where you have to guess the spelling of words. There are two teams.

- jueves 28 de noviembre Project: Your task is to talk about the different parts of a computer. You will use a poster with pictures (printed, drawn or both) to illustrate to the audience what different parts of the computer you are talking about. You need to show and least 15 parts of your computer. This means you need 15 printed images and/or drawings. Also, each image needs to have a short sentence in Spanish. This sentence needs to name the part you are talking about, and it needs to give some type of information about the part. Your poster should have the title: What is your computer like? Additionally, when you are done with your poster, you will need to present your poster to the class and talk about your computer. If you choose to use images from the internet, you may not use any of the images I have used already in the Power Point. We will work on this project in class November 28 and December 4-5. We should present to the class on Monday December 9.

- lunes 9 de diciembre Today will be absent. Thus, you need to spend the class today practicing for your oral presentation on your computer poster. You have written down sentences for each picture. However, the idea is that you are able to speak about your images without reading the information from your poster. Since your poster should be completed, spend the class learning the information on your poster. After practicing for a while, you could present the poster to one of your friends to see how you do. Please focus and practice well so you may do a great job.

- miércoles 8 y jueves 9 de enero Today we will finish presentations about The Computer.
- lunes 13 de enero Today you we will start a very short Power Point project about where people are from. Your first Power Point needs to have the following information about the country you are from: 1) a picture of the continent 2) a picture of a map of the country with its capital 3) a picture of the capital of the country and the city your are from 4) a picture symbolizing the population of the country 5) a picture of the currency of the country 6) a picture illustrating the language spoken in the country 7) a picture illustrating the type of government of the country 8) a picture of a typical dress, food, and dance (please link a related YouTube video to one of the three traditions mentioned above.) 9) a picture of yourself Important: all pictures need captions that explain the illustration. Your second Power Point needs to have the same information as above for a famous person of your choice. However, that person cannot be from the same country you are from. Take a look at Power Point # 1: Yo soy de Venezuela to see an example of what you should do.
- lunes 27 de enero Today you will finish any details that you have not taken care of with both of your Power Point presentations. For those of you who are completely done, you need to pick a partner and practice with him/her both presentations. Remember, you may not read from your Power Point. You need to speak fluently about eachslide. Thus, you have to study and memorizeyour information well. So, focus, study, and practice hard. This is a good preparation for our oral assessment we will be having after the coming holidays.
- jueves 6 de febrero Today we will read Word document # 1: Tell me about yourself (to the left). Afterwards, you need to do 2 things. 1) You need to include 10 different images throughout the text. These images need to add value to what the text is trying to get across. 2) You need to write six questions from the text and have someone from another table answer your question on your same document. Thus, share the document with another student via Google drive. Share your questions with me so I may revise them before you have someone answer them.
- lunes 10 de febrero Today we will begin with our oral evaluation about the Power Point on yourself and the Power Point on the famous person you researched about.
- miercoles 12 de febrero Today we will continue with the oral evaluations we started on Monday February 10th. After the evaluations, we will present our Power Points to the class. So, you need to send me both Power Points to my e-mail.While you wait for me to finish with the oral evaluations, please practice your Power Points. Remember, the idea is not for you to read but to share the content.
- jueves 13 de febrero No class do to ACER testing. However, if there is class, you need to write six questions from the text you see on the left part of your screen (Word document # 1: Tell me about yourself) and have someone from another table answer your question on your same document. Thus, share the document with another student via Google drive. Also, you need to answer the questions I have written for you inWord document # 2: Preguntas. This document is to the left of your screen. There are 12 questions in this document. We will check the answer to these questions on Wednesday February 19 in class. So, make sure you have them ready by then.
- miércoles 19 y jueves 20 de febrero Today we will continue revising the answers the questions on Word document # 2. Once we are done, we will continue presenting the Power Points.
- lunes 24 de febrero In the following days, we will review as a whole class some basic language functions and grammar that are essential for greeting each other. To the left of the screen, there is the video and the Power Point we will be using to review greetings. First we will review the video and some parts of the Power Point.
- Worksheet: Greetings and introduction. In this worksheet you will need to answer 4 personal questions and then fill in the blanks to complete a dialogue about greetings. When you are done, please check your answers on the word document to the left of the screen.
- Now, your task is to practice greeting each other. In your greetings you need to do include thefollowing: hi, good aftermoon, how are you, fine thank you, and you, great, what is your name, my name is ______, it is a pleasure, likewise, where are you from, I am from (country), and you, I am from (country), what city are you from, I am from (city), and you, I am from (city), how old are you?, When is your birthday?,it was a pleasure, thank you, bye, see you soon. Wednesday May 14th Today I am absent. Your task today is to write a paragraph about yourself and it needs to include the following:
Important: your paragraph needs an introduction sentence, the body with all the information in steps 1-7, and a closing sentence. Do your paragraph in your notebook, double spaced, and make sure your handwriting is beautiful so I may read it. If you don't know what double space means, ask your substitute teacher.

- jueves 20 de marzo Today we will begin out topic on describing yourself and others. In video #1: Describing yourself and others (Physical traits). As you watch the video, please take notes in your notebook or your computer. After you finish, we will touch base as a group and clarify any doubts.
- lunes 7 de abril Today we will go over Video # 1 together as a whole class to clarify the vocabulary and expression seen in this video.
- Class interview: Before you begin your interview, you need to write in your notebook the answer to the following question: ¿Cómo eres? Write 3 physical traits about yourself. Once your are done, you need to interview 4 different members of the class that are not in your group. Ask them the following question: ¿Cómo eres? The person answering will mention 2 physical traits using complete sentences. The person asking the question will also write in complete sentences the response of the person they interviewed in their notebook. Make sure to write your answer using the proper verb form. When everyone is done, we will share with the class.

After you are done, you need to do the following: 1) Write 3 sentences about 3 different family member. Each sentence needs to mention a character and a physical trait. 2) Write 3 sentences about 3 different friends. Each sentence needs to mention a character and a physical trait. 3) Write 3 sentences about 3 different famous people of your choice. Each sentence needs to mention a character and a physical trait. Try to finish as much as possible. Once you are done, e-mail me what you have finished. Do your sentences in a Word document.

Thursday May 8th Today I am absent. Your task is the following: 1) Review slides 55, 56, and 57 on Power Point # 1: (Como eres) with your partner and make sure both of you understand how to use the different types of articles. The slides have clear examples. If you and your partner don't understand after reviewing the slides, please be proactive and ask other members in the classroom. When you finish reviewing the slides, do Word document # 1: articles. In this document you need to do exercises (A, B, and C). When you are done, check your answers on Word document # 2: answers. 2) Now you are going to listen to a dialogue where Ana and Luis introduce themselves and talk about where they are from, their age, where they live, phone numbers and e-mails, character traits and then say bye. You may listen to the dialogue as many times as you need. Then you need to answer certain questions about the dialogue in Word document # 3: questions about dialogue. After you answer the questions, check your answers in Word document # 4: Answers to dialogue questions. Importan: Save all your work in Google drive.

Wednesday May 14th Today I am absent. Your task today is to write a paragraph about yourself and it needs to include the following:

Do your paragraph in your notebook, double spaced, and make sure your handwriting is beautiful so I may read it. If you don't know what double space means, ask your substitute teacher.
