resources under the Yr 3 / Yr 4 / Yr 5 / Yr 6 sections of the Resources part of this website.
Teaching primary languagesThis page reflects different aspects of my involvement with primary languages over the past few years. The first section contains materials I have used for primary training and development sessions in the support of primary colleagues in our feeder schools in their planning for teaching languages in their schools.
The second section has some materials that I have written and used with classes since starting to teach Y3 - 6 Spanish in one of our feeder primary schools. This section is a work in progress and I will add more materials on an ongoing basis.
The third section contains materials I made some time ago to support primary teachers in introducing Spanish to their pupils - although these are now some years old, I hope they may still be of some use to teachers, particularly non-specialists as the audio is included.
Finally, there are some miscellaneous resources that I have made and used - these in particular can be used for either Y6 or Y7 so could be useful when thinking about continuity and progression.

Evaluation formI am currently teaching Spanish to years 3, 4, 5 and 6 in one of our feeder primary schools. I am using a mixture of materials written by one of the ASTs in our department, Leigh McClelland, together with some materials I am writing as I go along. I have found it helpful, as I only see each class once a week, and they all have different amounts of prior learning, to put together a booklet that we can use together in class. As we cover (or revise) key language they use the traffic light system of coloured dots on each page to show me how confident they feel with the language on it. This is my first attempt at these booklets and I'm sure they will change and develop over time but they may be useful for teachers to use or adapt.

Yr 3
SpanishWe teach Spanish to all pupils throughout KS2. It is the first foreign language pupils learn.
I include here the planning documents that accompany our Yr 3 curriculum, as well as all of the lesson resources. The majority of these lesson resources were written by Leigh McClelland, AST at Comberton Village College.
Scheme of Work Planning DocumentY3 study booklet (PPT) Y3 study booklet (pdf) Here is the Spanish overview with a list of content (vocabulary and structures), skills and main task types and ways of working - follow the term links (Autumn, Spring, Summer) to get to the lesson resources.
Autumn Term
Year 3 pupils start with the phonics, learning the vowels first. They practise these using a variety of activities. They learn the numbers 1-10 and how to ask and give their age. Then they learn the other key phonic sounds. They read rhyming stories, sing songs, practise tongue twisters and have further opportunities to make the sound-written link by listening to words and anticipating their spelling. They also learn some nouns (pencil case items). They are made aware of gender through colour coding. They use the verb forms ‘tengo – I have’, ‘es – it is’ and implicitly encounter the negative forms of these.Spring Term
The theme is animals and colours. The linguistic focus is gender, articles (definite & indefinite), plurals and adjectives (position & basic agreement). The grammatical concepts are all based around a core vocabulary of 9 animal nouns and 6 colours so nothing so becomes too difficult.
The key verbs are ‘es’ (he/she/it is), ‘son’ (they are), hay (there is/are). The negative is revisited and there is also a subtle introduction to ‘también’ (also/too/as well), ‘pero’ (but).
Pupils are encouraged at all times to strive to work things out for themselves, work in pairs and small groups sharing knowledge, and to speak aloud when possible – thereby building confidence.
Pronunciation, memory, pattern finding, sentence building, autonomy, performance and creativity are the concepts at the heart of these resources.Summer Term
This unit focuses on memory and performance in that it asks pupils to retell a familiar story – The Very Hungry Caterpillar – in Spanish. Pupils are first introduced to useful vocabulary from the story – numbers, days of the week, fruits, foods – and then introduced to the story in video and audio format. After several activities developing memory and practising pronunciation, pupils will hopefully feel confident enough to retell the story in one of a variety of verbal ways – with pictures, with video, or with video and subtitles (for those who need the written back-up for now). The idea is that everyone can have a go and feel successful.
Take some video of your pupils’ performances or have the most confident perform in assembly!

Autumn Term
This unit focuses on numbers 1-31, months, dates, asking for and giving birthday, language to do with birthday celebrations and some more Christmas vocabulary. Learners will use the new language to understand and create invitations, follow instructions for making a piñata, understand songs, stories and video about birthdays and other celebrations.Spring Term
This unit develops the same linguistic skills in different contexts. There is a focus on shapes and prepositions of place, to be used creatively in an art project focusing on the work of Miró. Learners will use familiar verb forms in this new context to describe pictures they create. Pupils will also learn the parts of the body and face and use this language to describe the work of other famous Spanish artists (e.g. Picasso).Summer Term
During this term, pupils learn the language for family members. They re-tell the story 'The giant turnip'. They learn how to say 'Tengo un/una ..que se llama...' I have a ...called... and apply this also in the context of pets. They also learn adjectives for describing personality and physical description (hair and eyes). They use key verbs in the 3rd person singular and plural: --> tiene (has), es (is), tienen (have), son (are).

Autumn Term
This unit starts with simple calculations based on the five times table, and leads into learning how to ask for and give the time. Learners also extend their food and drink vocabulary. They learn how to say when mealtimes are and what they usually have, comparing with eating habits in Spain. They learn how to give their opinions of different food and drink and complete a simple food / drink diary in Spanish.
Spring Term
This unit focuses on sports and opinions. Learners pronounce cognate and other sports accurately from text, applying their phonics knowledge from previous years. They practise using a dictionary to look up unknown words. They describe sports, using simple sentences with 'tiene', 'es' and 'hay' for their peers to guess. They learn how to say which sports they like/dislike doing, using 'me gusta' + infinitive verb.
Summer Term
In this term, learners use dictionaries to look up different instruments. They use opinions in the context of different types of music, and to give reasons why, using 'porque' (because). Giving opinions can be tricky in Spanish because of the nature of using these verbs of opinion ‘gustar’ (to like) & ‘encantar’ (to love) and the fact that the adjectives used to describe things must match the number & gender of the thing they describe. They use the language they have learnt to create short raps or songs about food, sports or music.
As always, pupils are encouraged at all times to strive to work things out for themselves, work in pairs and small groups sharing knowledge, and to speak aloud when possible – thereby building confidence.

Autumn Term
Pupils begin this unit by learning to describe the weather. They then move on to revising colours (with adjectival agreement) with common nouns and then the flags of a few familiar countries. They also learn how to express what each country is famous for, paying attention to the number and gender of the nouns they are using. There follows a focus on Spain and some of the key features of the country. Attention is paid to forming plurals of nouns and using the adjective ‘mucho’ (lots of). Pupils are also encouraged to use ‘hay’ (there is/are) which they have met previously. Then pupils look at key cities and their location in Spain, using the points of the compass and key geographical features to locate them on a map. They recycle how to say what somewhere is famous for using the key cities they have been introduced to. They learn vocabulary for places in the town and are then invited to work independently to describe photos (making use of a word list provided) and give their opinions on them.
Spring Term
Pupils are treated to a summary of the features of the main festivals in Spain and encouraged to recognise questions, matching them to appropriate answers provided, and eventually to describe a festival in the UK if they can.
Following on from this, learners extend their learning to the theme of holidays. They research holiday destinations in Spanish-speaking countries and apply the language they know to describe holiday pictures and write holiday postcards.
Summer Term
We recognise that Yr 6 is a particularly full year, and that the pressures of assessments in Literacy and Numeracy often make it difficult to devote as much time to Spanish at various points in the year. In addition, there are other calls on Yr 6 time, including final plays / productions and often residential trips in the summer term. For that reason we have allowed the material from the Spring Term to be spread flexibly across these two terms.

Yr 8
SpanishCurrently we set Yr 7 students in November. From then onwards, and through Yr 8 and Yr 9 there are differentiated resources, although the themes in the SOW remain the same for the whole cohort. The Yr 8 resources we use in the department are more reliant (than the Yr 7 and Yr 9 resources) on a variety of textbooks. It is not therefore possible to share complete versions of all the material. This explains some obvious gaps and omissions. I share here whatever I can and provide the scheme of work so that those using our Yr 7 and Yr 9 resources and schemes of work can see the progression.

Year 9
Spanish ResourcesThe Scheme of Work and resources for Year 7 Spanish on this site are inspired by a CLIL approach to language teaching. More recently I have been involved in hosting a series of CLIL training sessions at my school for schools in the Eastern region. As a further development we are now teaching this SOW to Year 9 Spanish classes. It is still a work in progress, although it was taught through in its entirety in 2011-12. Thank you to Maria Collado for proof-reading and also for her excellent media resources which have been incorporated and adapted for part of term 2 of the SOW.

Agua y Pan (Bread and Water)
The umbrella theme is very broad and will allow sub-themes focusing on the science of water (its composition, states, the water cycle), issues of water use and shortage in different countries, and the environmental imperative to save water wherever we live. In the theme of bread we will explore cultural differences in terms of food preferences, the importance of bread for particular festivals (el Día de los Muertos), and as a theme within traditional stories and fairy tales. Practical outcomes from this module will include a video voice over for the water cycle, a Save Water publicity campaign, and an original fairy story involving food (either a short drama or a written story)Spring Term
Media
We anticipate that this module will include some familiar aspects of this topic, such as types of TV programme, film and watching habits and preferences. We plan to include also a focus on advertising, with a critical evaluation of the sorts of strategies employed to sell products. The practical outcome of the whole module will be a the production of a radio broadcast, for which they will compose and record the music in their music lessons, scripting and rehearsing the programme in their language lessons. Elements of the programme will include a news report, weather forecast, adverts, and a celebrity interview.Summer Term
El deporte (Paz y Guerra - dual linguists)
For single linguists, this module focuses on sport and the Olympics. Dual linguists complete one half term module on sport and the Olympics and a further half term on the theme of war and peace, using the resources on the film ‘Voces Inocentes’ which centres on the civil war in El Salvador and we will also use authentic materials for this from the Cafod website.

GCSE
Spanish resources for GCSEThe new GCSE (2010) has encouraged me to re-fresh my existing Spanish KS4 resources. As well as additional resources to develop speaking skills, in particular spontaneous talk, I have also been keen to integrate skills as much as possible in my teaching, both to save valuable class time and also because it seems to make sense for teaching and learning. One example of this is to test vocabulary through sentence-based gap fills, which promote comprehension skills as well as testing individual word knowledge. This is definitely a work in progress and I plan to upload lessons as I teach them during the year. The first section includes the schemes of work, and other useful documents. The second section has the vocabulary challenges and will be added to each week. The final section has the lesson resources, organised according to our SOW, which follows the Edexcel specification.

A LevelSpanish resources for A LevelComberton opened a new sixth form in September 2011 and I began teaching A Level Spanish for the first time since 1999. I greatly enjoyed preparing resources for teaching A/S and am now working on A2 for this year. I share teaching with a colleague so the materials uploaded here reflect the aspects of the course I am currently responsible for.

NVQ Spanish
NVQ Spanish Level 2 ResourcesI bought the ilanguages Scheme of Work and materials for this course. This is available to purchase from their website. Teaching the course for the first time last year and in addition, having a mixed age class of adults and Y10-11 students, I made some additional materials. I created a mixture of IWB and PowerPoint files to use with the class. The class had good access to computers, and there are therefore quite a few activities for independent vocabulary learning and consolidation. I used Quizlet for these and they can also be used for homework. Quizlet is free and the NVQ activities I made on it are available to all. If you type in ‘NVQ’ into the search box, it pulls up all those I made. Finally, as a department we subscribed to Vocab Express. All of our classes benefit from this excellent online learning resource, where an element of competition between the adult and student learners has encouraged a lot of additional learning outside the classroom.
The table below has the resources organised according to the weeks when they are used, in addition to the learning focus or topic. This schedule allowed me to complete the teaching of Level 2 NVQ by Easter of Y11. All of the cohort (including the adults!) achieved a 'B' grade equivalent in all 4 skills in summer 2012. Whilst many schools will now no longer be offering NVQ (it does not contribute to Ebacc measure, nor will it have GCSE equivalence from teaching 2013 onwards), some of these resources overlap with aspects of KS3 and GCSE courses and may have a more general usefulness there.

CoPE (Certificate of Personal Effectivness) through International Communication and Business EnterpriseExplanation of the courseIn 2006 we introduced this course as an alternative pathway for students at KS4. Although not recognised as a language qualification, it is award-bearing and can be achieved at Level 1 (E-grade equivalent) or Level 2 (B-grade equivalent). It is a portfolio-based course in which students achieve through a series of challenges and skills units. The skills units are: Improving own learning; Working with others; Problem-solving; Discussion; Oral presentation and Research. The CoPE course need not involve languages at all. Our version, however, involves as much language as possible. Half of the credits for the course are achieved by completing the International Award. In addition, students in most years have taken part in a study trip to Spain as an integrated part of the course. On this page, I've included the key documentation necessary for an understanding of the course and in addition, some learning resources we have used to help students to structure their own Spanish programmes of study.
